An Interns Perspective on Healthcare

My name is Marian Karam and I am a senior at Towson University. Since this is my first internship, I was not sure what to expect. However, three weeks in, I can honestly say that I have learned so much and am extremely thankful to be a part of the Lighthouse team. During this short time period I have been educated in auditing, medical coding and consulting. Although my college classes have allowed me to be well prepared, this real world experience is unparalleled. Every day I am able to pull and apply my classroom knowledge while expanding on it with real world practice.

The LHA team have served as wonderful mentors to me during this experience. They have entrusted me with managing my own marketing projects and continues to push me in reaching my goals. These projects have enhanced my knowledge in the consulting process. I have created success stories that outline which activities have been carried out in each contract and how we have supported practices in the past. These success stories will be posted on our website under the education tab. Additionally, I have started working on a white paper highlighting the importance of a comprehensive EHR

implementation. I will soon speak in a marketing meeting to inform my coworkers on how to utilize social media as a tool for growth. I have also begun to assist in policy compliance projects.

While being at Towson I have learned a wide spectrum of hospital administration workflow and revenue cycle knowledge but little on the importance of coding. Medical coding quickly captured my interest since my first day. I was so captivated by this division of LHA because I realized that a large portion of healthcare has to do with coding compliance. Medical coding is what links hospitals and insurance companies. It also relates to risk scores and higher reimbursements if done properly. I have assisted them in coding projects and am becoming more familiar with the ICD-10 and CPT books.

Additionally, I have been granted the opportunity to attend a few HFMA conferences and dinners where I am able to experience healthcare discussions first hand alongside hospital CEO’s and CFO’s. These events have broadened my knowledge on real world problems that occur daily within as well as beyond the walls of any hospital. I have focused on not only absorbing the knowledge, but also challenge myself to come up with innovative solutions to persistent issues. I hope to apply my ideas in the future and remain present in the creation of a better healthcare system for everyone.

In this position I have also observed the advisors at LHA go into a practice and solve its existing problems with innovative techniques. They are able to transform a facility from the inside out. Each client we have worked with endures smoother workflows, enhanced compliance and revenue increases. I am very excited to continue learning in my position as well as contribute to future projects.
